Zodiac Players

Hotel di Bogor "Dinner" isn't exactly kid-friendly, Hardison says, and he at first gave it a PG rating.

"Yeah, definitely PG," he said at a recent rehearsal at the Shoals Theatre in Florence. "It's not PG-13. OK ... It's PG-13, I would probably say that.

"It's a little risque, but it's not too off-base."

Bogor - The Zodiac Players are presenting the French play, which they also performed in 1999, this weekend, moving the setting to London and relishing in the farcical plot's rapid-fire dialogue and double-crossing schemes.

"It's the kind of thing people like to see around here, a real fast-paced comedy," says Hill, who is making his stage directing debut.

"It seems to be what brings more people in."

Bernard (Hardison) is planning a romantic weekend with his mistress, Suzanne (Mary Katherine Rowe), while his wife, Jacqueline (Juanica Baugh), visits her mother. He hired a chef, Suzette (Amy Butler), for the weekend and invites his friend, Robert (Adam Neal), over, each to serve as an alibi of sorts in case Jacqueline asks questions. But Jacqueline decides to stick around ... perhaps because she's having an affair with Robert.

With even the double-crossers being double-crossed, it can be hard to know which character to root for, much less respect, says Rowe, who is pursuing acting outside of the theater and stars in a feature-length film, "Drowning," that is in post-production. But, at least the audience can laugh at them, she says.

"It's almost a cartoon," Hill says. "It gets pretty ramped up, and it's a lot of fun."

Hill's daughter, Logan, wearing a green Oscar the Grouch T-shirt at rehearsal, is serving as his all-around assistant and stage manager, while his other daughters, Dylan and Ashlyn, watch. The girls will probably be the youngest attendees for "Don't Dress for Dinner," but Hill and the actors assure that the play is not over-the-top or crass.

Hectic is a better word.

"It's very confusing, which hopefully will translate into laughter," Hill says.

Through the confusion, is there a moral to the story?

Yes - "Don't have an affair," Rowe says.
